Renowned for his skill in addressing complex conditions of the upper extremity, Dr. Weil treats a wide array of hand ailments, including but not limited to carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, sports injuries, Dupuytren’s disease, thumb arthritis, and wrist fractures. His unique qualification within the Swedish Hospital system to perform endoscopic carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel release surgeries positions him as a leading figure in minimally invasive treatments for median and ulnar nerve compression. These advanced procedures are celebrated for their excellent outcomes, reduced pain, and faster recovery times, enabling patients to quickly return to their daily activities and sports.

Dr. Weil’s academic journey began at the University of Pennsylvania for his undergraduate education, followed by a pivotal period at the National Institutes of Health where he conducted research at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the New York University School of Medicine and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. His residency included specialized orthopedic trauma surgery training at the esteemed R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, alongside involvement in the orthopedic care of high-profile sports teams and dance companies such as the New York Mets, New York Rangers, New York City Ballet, and the Alvin Ailey Dance Company.

Furthering his expertise, Dr. Weil continued his training with a Hand and Microvascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center, contributing significantly to scientific literature and presenting his research at national conferences.

Embracing the Pacific Northwest lifestyle, Dr. Weil and his family made Seattle their home. When not practicing medicine, he can be found with his family enjoying the slopes of Crystal Mountain or engaging in outdoor adventures such as alpine and backcountry skiing, hiking, tennis, and cycling. A seasoned athlete, Dr. Weil has completed numerous marathons and triathlons, including the Ironman Canada, and has embarked on treks across the globe’s most challenging terrains, from the Himalayas in Nepal to the Inca Trail in Machu Picchu, Peru.

Research Experience

  1. NYU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, LABORATORY FOR CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH, DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY, New York, NY Medical Student Independent Study Project (September 1997)

Mentor- Dr. Aubrey Galloway, MD and Dr. Paolo Mignatti, PhD.

Created adenoviral constructs encoding sense and antisense strands of membrane type matrix metalloprotease 1 (MT-MMP1). Constructs used to study the role of MT-MMP1 in smooth muscle cell migration through extracellular matrix and neointimal formation following endothelial injury in coronary arteries.

  2. NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH, LABORATORY OF HOST DEFENSES, Bethesda, MD Medical Student Summer Fellowship Program (June 1996-August 1996)

Mentors- John Gallin, MD and Harry Malech, MD.

Expressed and purified the CS1 domain of Fibronectin using a baculovirus eukaryotic expression system. Purified protein used in conjunction with cytokines in stem cell cultures in order to inhibit differentiation of CD34+ cells and increase engraftment of transplanted peripheral blood progenitor cells during gene therapy transduction protocols.

  3. NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH, LABORATORY OF HOST DEFENSES, Bethesda, MD pre-I.R.T.A. Fellow (June 1994-June 1995)

Mentors- John Gallin, MD and Harry Malech, MD.

Created retroviral construct encoding the p67phox subunit of the NADPH oxidase assembly. Through transduction of CGD patient cytokine mobilized peripheral blood hematopoietic progenitor cells was able to show significant reconstitution of oxidase activity in oxidase deficient patient CD34+ cells through gene therapy protocols using the newly created construct.

  4. UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, GENETICS DIVISION, Miami, FL Research Associate (September 1993-May 1994)

Philosophy of Care

I believe in meeting patients’ individual needs through comprehensive evaluation and treatment designed to help them achieve an active, pain-free lifestyle. Many musculoskeletal conditions can be treated by non-surgical techniques–surgery is just one treatment option. I combine leading edge techniques with proven traditional methods to provide patients with the best orthopaedic care possible.

I work to develop a partnership with my patients. On my part, this begins with listening. And one of the most important things I need to know is how the physical problem affects this patient’s life. We develop a dialogue, through which my patients understand the diagnostic process, their own unique problem, their treatment choices, and the recovery process. Patients help to guide and direct the diagnostic and treatment activities.

I believe that knowledgeable patients make the best decisions about their own treatment. That’s why I explain every step of the diagnostic process. Next, I want my patients to understand their condition: How it developed and how various treatment approaches can improve or repair the problem. When we consider treatment alternatives, I present a realistic outlook on the results we can achieve. I’ll also be frank about any risks that might be involved. If a non-surgical option is available, I’ll explain that avenue in depth.

My purpose is to handle each and every patient visit with care and proficiency. It is also highly important to me that our Doctor/Patient relationship is open and honest. It is my responsibility to make sure patients are well informed about their conditions and the multiple choices of treatment. My professional staff and I will also provide you with patient education materials, (e.g., web sites, pamphlets, and video tapes) that give you added appreciation of your condition and treatment options.
